The Founder
In 2003 five siblings: Rose N Waigwa, Prof Esther M. Kahangui, Lee W. Waruingi, Prof Wangari Stone and Jonathan W. Muranguri came together driven by a mutual compassion for the orphaned and vulnerable children within society, which led them to seek ways to engage and devote their resources to charitable activities in catering to the needs of the children. After several meetings, UZIMA TRUST FUND (UTF) was founded.
Uzima Trust Fund was registered on 2nd May 2003. It was registered under the Trustees (Perpetual Succession) Act Chapter 164 of the laws of Kenya.
One of the founders, Rose N. Waigwa, who is a trained Girls’ Brigade officer and was running a Girls Brigade in one of the churches in Nairobi for 14 years, strongly felt the calling from God to work with female children in the slums of Nairobi.
In June 2006, a Girls Brigade was formed in Maili Saba Tumaini Church. With God’s provision Rose purchased a three-roomed mud house which was within the Tumaini Church compound and this was used for Girls Brigade meetings and teaching the children.
Subsequently, with the provision of juice and snacks on Saturdays, the popularity of the program increased. Two years later, arrangements were made to bring a young Christian man into the program to help expand the program to boys.
In 2008, Rose raised resources and purchased an eighth of an acre in Dandora, Shiranga slum where she erected a small hall. The Saturday program was transferred to this hall. Henceforth, the Boys’ Brigade and The Girls’ Brigade programs were now able to run independently. Every Saturday Christian instruction, games and educational projects were provided through Girls Brigade and Boys Brigade.
In January 2010, a nursery school was also started in the same hall as the classrooms. A trained ECD teacher gave formal lessons to approximately 40 children.
In 2013, 3.14 acres of land were purchased within the vicinity of the current operational area with the help of funds donate by Maple Grove Covenant Church, from Maple Grove, Minnesota, U.S.A.
In 2014, with the help of Maple Grove Covenant Church, six classrooms, a kitchen, a storage room and a small office were built.
In 2015 Maple Grove Covenant Church raised additional funds to build a fence around the 3.14 acres of land.
Our outlook in 2018 and beyond is vibrant and hopeful, with a focus on self-sustainability projects which will enable Uzima Education Centre to be a thriving resource for transforming the lives of the children and families in Shiranga.
